Husband-and-wife team Roy and Tara Gilad opened Vitality Bowls in their hometown of San Ramon to offer a healthy eating option. Containing no preservatives, trans fats, or added sugar, the sweetly filled bowls are loaded with fruits and nuts and a variety of toppings to please both the lactose intolerant and the health conscious—and youngsters looking for a sweet-and-tart treat won’t know the difference.

DIY: Start with a base of açai, banana, strawberries, soy milk, and apple juice and choose from toppings like bee pollen, goji berries, and honey.
Drink up: If you prefer your fruit in a glass, opt for a smoothie.
Hot off the presses: Lunch specials let you add a traditional panini to a small bowl for $10.99 (large bowl, $12.99), or get a panini and smoothie for $9.99.
Retail therapy: The second location is in Stoneridge Shopping Center.

Vitality Bowls, 2473 Stoneridge Mall Rd., E-205, Pleasanton, (925) 463-2224; 211 Market Place Dr., San Ramon, (925) 804-6012, vitalitybowls.com. Breakfast and lunch daily.
