Get Dressed, Dude. Here’s How.

We finally found a way to get your guy to go shopping, but we still can’t guarantee he’ll try anything on. Walnut Creek’s new menswear store, Pelican Rock, features a “situation wall,” with outfits for occasions such as date night and casual Friday, which can be bought right off the mannequins.
“The idea was to bridge the gap between a T-shirt and a suit for work,” says owner Matthew Gerhardt. “Most guys can figure out a suit and tie, but the trouble comes when picking up an outfit for a dinner date or coffee with clients.” Gerhardt shares his top picks for casual pieces that don’t sacrifice style for comfort.
Gant men’s shirts:
The brand specializes in fit and runs trim in the chest and waist for a slimmer profile (and to avoid the dreaded muffin-top look). “Customers in these shirts have been asked if they lost 15 pounds,” Gerhardt says.
Twill chino pants in a fun color:
Gerhardt suggests baby blue, which can move from the golf course to dinner without looking garish. A little stretch helps pants keep their form.
Italian, soft-shoulder blazer in a cotton or linen blend:
Look for a deconstructed style, which layers well. Lightweight fabrics transition easily from summer to fall.
This popular pullover looks equally at home paired with high-end denim or at a football game. Gerhardt suggests layering a button-down underneath for an unexpected pop of color or pattern.
Pelican Rock carries J Brand, whose slim fit and distinct washes work for dressier occasions, and Joe’s Jeans, which Gerhardt describes as “the every-man jean.”
