Cheap Eats: Petra
Get your falafel and tabbouleh fix at Petra.
Why Come? This small family-run restaurant offers Jordanian dishes as authentic as you’ll find anywhere in the Bay Area. Solicitous service and plenty of freebies—including pickled condiments, cardamom tea, pita with dipping sauce, and creamy lentil soup—make it a homey gold mine for diners.
What’s the atmosphere like? Simple, with colorful Middle Eastern touches. It looks like an order-at-the-counter operation (and is priced as such), but it’s full service.
What to order? The classics—falafel, baba ghanoush, and tabbouleh—are all extraordinary. If you want to splurge, look for the specials. The mansaf—slow-braised lamb with almonds and yogurt—is amazing.
How much? Salads and sandwiches run $5–$10; platters and shawarma ring in around $10–$15. Great daily lunch deals.
When is it open? Lunch and dinner Tues.–Sun.
Where is it? 4524 Las Positas Rd., Livermore, (925) 371-0412, petra-livermore.com.
