Cactus, with its prime College Avenue location across from the Rockridge BART station, isn’t your average cafeteria-line taqueria. Sunny yellow walls, blond-wood tables, and high windows create the open, lively atmosphere, and hormone-free Niman Ranch beef and Fulton Valley Farm chicken—along with fresh fish and a salsa bar—make up the menu. Although there may be lines at dinnertime and on Sunday mornings, the food never takes more than 10 minutes. Try the chicken burritos with expertly seasoned red mole sauce, or the pescado fresco (sautéed fresh fish on a crispy corn tortilla with salad). Save room for sides, like a big bowl of grilled vegetables, or the “casa” salad with chipotle dressing or citrus vinaigrette. One thing to watch out for: the addictive alfajor, a caramel-filled shortbread cookie. Lunch and dinner daily. Also in Berkeley.
