Named after an urban legend that the local creek was once populated by escaped simians from a nearby circus, Creek Monkey Tap House offers a fun new option to an oft-desolate after-dark downtown Martinez. It starts with the excellent beer list, a veritable who’s who in the NorCal brewing scene, including the East Bay’s Ale Industries, Drake’s, and Linden Street. The food is a step above typical brewpub fare. Tender, meaty chicken wings are offered three ways: We dug the subtle, smoky beer BBQ sauced version. With caramelized onions, roasted peppers, avocado, and Sriracha aioli, the grilled chicken sandwich was a bit of a culinary mess, but a hearty mac and cheese with chicken and bacon hit the comfort food mark. Perfectly cooked fish and chips with a thick, spiced cornmeal crust was great as well. Lunch and dinner daily.
