The reopening of Grand Fare Market in Oakland is a reason to celebrate—literally. The serene courtyard’s twin teak picnic tables—when graced with chef Ian Marks’ rustic-refined, seasonal California-Mediterranean fare—create a scene deserving of the term feast. A few of Grand Fare’s original entrées, such as succulent roast chicken and traditional porchetta, still appeared on the menu on our visit. But fresh starters like Marks’ delicately made, sweet-salty avocado toasts and the seasonally offered grilled, lacquered, and cheese-stuffed nectarine halves provide an edible, if not indelible, treatise on how to make Bay Area produce shine. Grand Fare now has ample indoor seating (with table service under way), and the market remains, boasting a flower shop, gourmet pantry, and to-go counter, allowing you to style your own repast at home. Lunch and dinner Tues.–Sun.
