Packed on weeknights with good-looking couples and their well-behaved children, Kakui brings a sleek yet family-friendly, suburban-chic decor to Montclair. Japanese staples are all available but pushed upscale a few notches. We started with the special toro roll: asparagus tempura surrounded by rice, topped with fatty tuna and tobiko; and the signature Kakui roll: hamachi, tuna, salmon, and avocado wrapped in thinly sliced cucumber—no seaweed, no rice—then topped with sauce. Also check out the brussels sprouts—charred so the outer leaves are blackened and crisp, and drizzled with a mustardy miso vinaigrette. Three large square cuts of deep fried agedashi tofu were ultrafirm inside, delicately crisp outside. Lunch and dinner daily.
