Not too haute. Not too bold. Piccolo hits just the right note for Orinda Theatre Square. It’s a convivial Italian café with a relaxed neighborhood spirit. The menu is simple enough for kids yet playful enough for date night. Classic spinach and arugula salads show sass. A Tuscan-style salad with ripe pears makes for a fresh intro to cheesy, not saucy, pizzas. Crackery crusts become the foil for combos of Niman Ranch sausage with mushrooms and prosciutto with Gorgonzola. Our calzone, overstuffed with meat, was good but less intriguing. There’s a lot of salt in all these items, too, which might curb your appetite. So cleanse your palate with fizzy water, beer by the pitcher, or a glass of wine from the small and smart list. Pastas and gluten-free crusts add to the appeal. Lunch and dinner daily.
