Crowning a stunning three-story building in downtown Walnut Creek, Rooftop’s “bar to the stars” offers the loveliest spot in town for warm-weather dining when its roof is rolled back. While the ambitious menu was still coming together on our two early visits, faring well were gutsier dishes like the smoky, charred rib eye steak and the moules frites—mussels in a silky shellfish broth, with a side of fries and thick aioli for dipping. The menu has no regional theme, but Vietnamese (lime-spiced chicken wings) and French (smoked trout rillettes) dishes are specialties. Also consider a half-dozen oysters with the bubbly Up and Up—one of Rooftop’s many compelling craft cocktails. Lunch and dinner daily.
