Tucked in the back of a boutique-lined alley, Yanni’s Taverna dishes up Greek food the way it’s meant to be: light, fresh, and made to order. The vegetarian sampler includes zesty dolmas, moist herb-crusted falafel, and fresh-baked pita infused with olive oil. Even the hummus is light and fresh. Avgolemono soup, with its simple lemon-infused chicken broth thickened with rice, is another light option (and it’s served with that addictive pita). Also light is the atmosphere: Taverna is the more formal spin-off of owner Voula Gougousis’ popular takeout-centric Martinez café but shares a similarly casual, unpretentious vibe, along with a menu of expertly executed Greek standards. A classic gyro comes smothered with tzatziki sauce while deconstructed gyro sliders are great for sharing. The moussaka features light-as-air béchamel, and lamb skewers shine with tender, well-seasoned meat. Portions are ample and prices affordable. Lunch and dinner Mon.–Sat.
