Footloose, Fancy-Free, and Fifty
Diablo Theatre Company is going strong at fifty.

Back when Walnut Creek had walnut orchards, a group of residents—UC Berkeley song-and-dance alums—decided to put on a show in their new hometown. Their Diablo Light Opera Company, recently renamed Diablo Theatre Company, is still going strong after 50 years and is partnering with celebrated Company C Contemporary Ballet to present the Broadway classic On the Town.
The fast-paced, dance-fantastic show follows the adventures of three sailors looking for love while on shore leave in Manhattan. The great choreographer Jerome Robbins devised the idea for the show based on his ballet Fancy Free, and brought in a hot young symphony conductor, Leonard Bernstein, to do the music. Their collaboration changed American musical theater. And the collaboration of Diablo Theatre Company and Company C should thrill audiences at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts, September 11–27.For tickets, call (925) 943-7469, or visit lesherartscenter.org.
