UC Berkeley’s new head football coach Sonny Dykes grew up in West Texas, the heart of Friday Night Lights country. Fans of the bestselling book, television series, and movie know that football is church, entertainment, and community pride all wrapped into one. “That was the culture I grew up in,” says Dykes. “Every Friday, the town packed up and went wherever the team was going to be. That helped me develop my love and passion for the game.” Cal football fans hope that this passion will help Dykes lead the Golden Bears to their first Rose Bowl appearance since 1959. “Ultimately, the reason I’m here, and the coaching staff 52 theberkeleyoaklandbook.com is here, is to win a Pac-12 Championship and get Cal to the Rose Bowl,” says Dykes. He spent the last three years coaching at Louisiana Tech, and before that, Arizona, Texas Tech, and Kentucky. “My wife and I have vacationed in NorCal for years. We love Napa, skiing at Heavenly, and playing golf in Pebble Beach,” says Dykes. “I can’t wait to take our kids to watch the A’s play.” Asked to comment about any similarities between Berkeley and Texas, Dykes laughs. “I told my dad legendary football coach Spike Dykes, Berkeley is basically Austin, but even more so,” he says. “The cities have similar cultures, with the great universities and real diversity.” Even though Berkeley doesn’t shut down on Friday night to watch high school football, Dykes feels Cal’s fans are just as passionate as any others in the country. “What’s cool about this place is there is passion for everything, including football,” says Dykes. “For academics, for athletics, for speaking their mind: Whatever people do in this area, they are passionate about it.” For schedule and ticket information, go to calbears. com. —Peter Crooks U B_io Age: 43 Years coaching college football: 18 Favorite team growing up: Dallas Cowboys Lives in: Piedmont
