Meet Deakyn, a 4 year old warrior in our East Bay community. What started as normal childhood illness (i.e. croup and some headaches), turned to uncontrollable headaches, and an emergency room visit, which led to a CT scan and the discovery of a plum size tumor in his brain. Within 2-days, the tumor was the size of an orange.
According to the neurosurgeon at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, this is only one of 300 cases in the United States. Thankfully (and sadly) the surgeon has experience in this procedure and Deakyn is in great hands.
Deakyn has had 2 lengthy 12+ hour surgeries to remove the mass. They are now awaiting the results of the pathology in order to determine the next course of action. It is still unclear whether the tumor or surgery caused any damage to Deakyn's brain, which may impact his motor and intellectual functions.
As such, his path is unclear as is the length of his recovery, but what is certain is that he's a fighter and to date doing better than anyone could have hoped.
In support of Deakyn and his family, Scott's Seafood in Walnut Creek is hosting a Happy Hour and Silent Auction to raise money for Deakyn's lengthy journey and recovery. Let's come together as a community for one of our own.
