Culture Trip From Home

All-Star Living Room Concert

Musicians banding together for a concert or recording session is nothing new (think Live Aid or "We Are the World"), but the FOX Presents the iHeart Living Room Concert for America is an unprecedented event with an all-star line-up of musicians performing from home. Acts include Billie Ellish, Mariah Carey, the Backstreet Boys (with each member joining in from his respective abode), Dave Grohl, Alicia Keys, Vallejo native H.E.R., and the East Bay’s own Billie Joe Armstrong, among others. The Elton John-hosted show will pay tribute to healthcare workers facing COVID-19 on the frontlines and benefits charities Feeding America and First Responders Children’s Foundation. The show airs on Sunday, March 29, at 6 p.m. PT on FOX, iHeartMedia radio stations, and the iHeartRadio app.

A Family Mystery Tour

Explore the Winchester Mystery House through a tour of the historic San Jose attraction. The free 40-minute video takes virtual visitors through the histories and mysteries of the architectural wonder. The video will be available until April 7 or until the attraction opens to the public once more.

Online Wine Tastings

Those weekend trips to Wine County are on hold for the moment, but you can still take advantage of guided wine tastings online. Nottingham Cellars in Livermore offers tasting experiences hosted by their winemaking and hospitality teams through Zoom (meeting ID 826-937-4345) and Instagram Live on Sundays at 3:30 p.m.

Winemaker Steven Mirassou of Livermore’s Lineage Collection also hosts virtual tastings through a private Facebook group; the experiences include food and wine discussions and cover vintages from Lineage Wine, The Steven Kent Winery, Mia Nipote Wines, and Ragbag WineWorks. (Search for The Lineage Collection on Facebook.)

Streaming Broadway Shows

From critically acclaimed productions to family-favorite shows, Broadway HD offers a wealth of hit Broadway productions, all viewable via streaming for $8.99 a month (the site offers a free seven-day trial). The collection of streaming shows includes two productions from the current Berkeley Rep series: School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play and Culture Clash (Still) in America.

Virtual Screening Rooms

Alamo Drafthouse and the Roxie in San Francisco are known for their curated slate of films, and now both movie theaters are offering screenings at home. Alamo’s first movie is Bacurau, a sci-fi-themed drama from Brazil that won the Jury Prize at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The purchase of a $12 ticket is good for a five-day pass to watch the film online. The Roxie’s virtual cinema offerings are the shroom-tastic documentary Fantastic Funghi and Chinese pulp-noir The Wild Goose Lake (prices range from $4.99 to $12).,

Cinephiles can also revisit David Lynch’s 1986 classic Blue Velvet through a Zoom discussion hosted by Will "The Thrill" Viharo in association with Oakland’s New Parkway theater.
