At-Home Activities for A Beautiful Mess: Weavers and Knotters of the Vanguard

The Bedford Gallery is open again, welcoming visitors through mid-June to their latest exhibition, A Beautiful Mess, which highlights textile art created by women. If you’re at home with young ones, consider a crafting day with project suggestions on the gallery’s website, including a paper plate weaving activity and guidelines for making textured collages. (You can also catch the A Beautiful Mess exhibition digitally.)

Albums from the Alphabet Rockers

The Oakland-based Alphabet Rockers have been delighting young ears since their first album dropped in 2012. The group aims to address social issues and inspire listeners to create change. Their two most recent albums—Rise Shine #Woke and The Love—were both nominated for Grammy Awards, and, between the two, offer hopeful messages about living authentically and confronting hatred, and highlight gender non-conforming, trans, and two-spirit stories.

The Oakland Puzzle Book

This fun-filled activity book, which debuted earlier this month, offers nearly 100 crossword puzzles, word searches, jumbles and other on-the-page games all centered around the city of Oakland. Kids and the young-at-heart are sure to enjoy the references to many local landmarks, including Children’s Fairyland, Oakland’s iconic redwoods, and more, and might even learn new facts about this East Bay metropolis along the way. Order it from a local independent bookshop, such as Rakestraw Books.
