"Toxic" by Kehlani
On March 12, Oakland-raised R&B singer Kehlani dropped her latest single, "Toxic"—her third release since February, following "Valentine’s Day (Shameful)" and "Konclusions" with ex-boyfriend and rapper YG. The song provides an emotional and retrospective look at a complicated, up-and-down relationship. kehlani.com.
One Day at a Time—Season Four
On March 24, revived fan favorite One Day at a Time returns to the small screen, this time via the Pop TV streaming service. The situation comedy highlights important social issues and questions through the Cuban-American Alvarez family, led by a single mom. Berkeley’s Rita Moreno consistently steals the show as the family’s grandmother. poptv.com/odaat.
HBO’s Euphoria, a dark drama series focusing on a group of high school students, made headlines when it was released last summer. The show’s social media accounts recently released a shot of Oakland’s Zendaya and Angus Cloud at a table read for season two, so be sure to binge the first series soon to be prepared when the next one arrives. hbo.com/euphoria.
Maya’s Notebook and A Long Petal of the Sea
The North Bay’s Isabel Allende is a literary legend, and her 2014 novel, Maya’s Notebook, highlights a girl who falls down the wrong path while attending a Berkeley high school. If you’ve already read it, don’t miss Allende’s latest novel, A Long Petal of the Sea, a story about a couple exiled during the Spanish Civil War, published in January. isabelallende.com.
