Modern Landscape

Through 1/15 The newest exhibit at Oakland’s Slate Contemporary Gallery features paintings from Jennifer Nehrbass and Phillip Griswold that highlight the stunning beauty and complexities of the natural world in glorious color. (If you’re looking for a road trip, Slate is also behind the “Crossing Boundaries” show at Cornerstone in Sonoma, which runs through the end of the year).

Threads of Hope

12/9 Join Diablo magazine on the web this Thursday for our yearly Threads of Hope festivities, which pay tribute to incredible volunteers making a difference in the East Bay. This year’s recipients are from One Nation Dream Makers, Hospice East Bay, the Homeless Action Coalition, the Lazarex Cancer Foundation, and the Contra Costa County Arts and Culture Commission. RSVP here.

A Christmas Carol

12/9-12/23 Charles Dickens’s story of the stingy Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future is a hallmark of the winter season—and the annual production from Center Repertory Company at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek is beloved by many in the East Bay and beyond. The show is directed by Lesher Center general manager Scott Denison, who is retiring early next year.

Walnut Creek on Ice

12/10-1/9 Enjoy the winter season with a trip to the rink at Walnut Creek on Ice. Make a reservation on the web for a 75-minute round of skating—admission prices cover your rental skates. (If you’re a hockey player, check the website for drop-in times, or participate in a Family Skate Session on Tuesday evenings.)

Science Under the Sea Stars

12/15 Across the bay, California Academy of Sciences’s Science Under the Sea Stars event will include seasonal cookie decorating, a winter magic show, displays on Arctic creatures, a science activity centered around snow, and more. Visitors will also have after-hours access to the Academy’s exhibits and can grab a bite to eat off a holiday menu—think eggnog pudding and potato latkes.
