10/3 Pegasus Books’s Berkeley shop brings together five local former and current poets laureate from Vallejo, Sacramento, Berkeley, and Livermore for an evening of poetry highlighting societal injustice.

10/4-10/27 El Cerrito’s Contra Costa Civic Theatre presents the Tony-nominated bluegrass musical story of a literary editor, a World War II soldier, and a lost child in the American South during the 1920s and 1940s. The show was written by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell.

10/4-11/3 Alameda’s Altarena Playhouse presents Steve Martin’s fictional play centering on Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso, as they face off in intellectual debate about change, love, inspiration, art, and science in a Paris bar in 1904.

Off Menu: Contemporary Art about Food

10/6-12/15 The Bedford Gallery’s latest exhibition explores the way that food has been used in the arts for centuries as an emblem of culture. The show will feature work from international artists in various mediums, as well as a traveling exhibition of fine art prints from Salvador Dalí.
