Perched atop a Grizzly Peak bluff in Berkeley stands a proud icon to modernist architecture. The nationally acclaimed design team of Robert Swatt, FAIA, and Terrence Camp, ASLA, collaborated to create an environment respectful of this sensitive topographic location. Nestled behind a pine grove and tucked into the backing hill lies a home with arguably the best views of the
San Francisco Bay and city skyline. Outdoor living is provided through extensions of the indoor spaces. Synthetic turf terraces, green roof applications, and open-air rooms allow for ample exterior living opportunities.

Although there are intricate
complexities to the architecture and
structural engineering, the resulting
residence is a stunning portrayal of
simplicity, from the materials to the
dramatic shadow lines. The landscape architecture, with its tall structural walls and sustainable approach to storm water control, uses a similar palette of materials and clean lines to pay tribute to the host residence. Storm water that falls on impervious surfaces is collected and conveyed to detention basins, which then bio-filtrate the toxic particulates from the water’s sediment prior to releasing it into the vegetative landscape. An alternate basin returns filtered storm water to the city storm water system, which then deposits into San Francisco Bay.
