A hillside Mediterranean estate in the Diablo Range finds transformation due to expanding family needs, creating opportunities for master planning and site development. The primary construction revolved around the proposed pool/spa complex and adjacent Accessory Dwelling Unit (guesthouse), all within the vicinity of large valley oak tree canopies.
Sensitive grading operations near the drip lines of the two magnificent oaks required strategic placement of the site’s three main outdoor living zones. The pool/spa complex now occupies the easily accessible central recreational area. Multiple wall terraces were woven into the hillside, allowing the infinity-edge pool to nestle comfortably into the slope with minimal disturbance of the oak root zone. The lower property was developed into a Palladian garden terrace, with the classical forms, symmetry, and strict proportions that are the hallmarks of this timeless motif. The infinity pool above becomes a waterfall backdrop in this space.
In an effort to take advantage of the valley view a journey through the oak-covered canopy to a passive fire retreat was incorporated. Thanks to dramatic lighting, the oaks and stonework come alive in the evening, inviting further enjoyment of this intriguing and stunning property.
